| What is Sports Slurping? |
| Around the globe competitive Slurping has been going on unnoticed in backyards, bedrooms and 7-Eleven car parks with popularity continually growing in countries like the USA, Canada and Australia. Slurping involves a group of participants trying to drink a frozen beverage, called a Slurpee, as quickly as humanly possible. | Why should slurping be deemed a sport? |
| In our endeavours to officially classify Slurping as an internationally recognized sport we have encountered more than our fair share of unwarranted criticism. It is our belief that Slurping has as much right to be a sport as golf, tennis and curling. I guess the best way to ascertain whether a particular activity is worthy of being deemed a sport is to determine whether a number of core ‘sporting’ characteristics are present. |
| According to Honeybourne et al. all sport must: |
- contain an element of chance
- involve competition between distinct sides
- involve physically strenuous activity
- have clear winners and losers
- be spontaneous and enjoyable
- use special equipment
|
Slurping against the clock, against another Slurper or against a previously set record is certainly a competition, and it provides an outcome with winners and losers. The sport of Slurping also requires discipline, determination and stamina. Slurping therefore certainly fulfils the above criteria and can be deemed within reason to be a sport.

Further goals of the OSOS include, but are not limited to, the following: |
- to establish a fair and equitable rating system for the various liquid-centric competitions;
- to promote safety measures for participants in the conduct of matches and to ensure that only trained individuals compete in official speed Slurping matches;
- to establish and maintain Slurping records in events sanctioned by the OSOS;
- to compile, categorize and make available to fans of the sport a complete history of competitive Slurping along with an archive of photos and other historic material;
- to coordinate and control sponsorships for televised events; and
- to develop and run an OSOS Slurp-Off, the World Championship of Slurping.
|
|
| SAFETY STANDARDS: |
Safety is the first consideration in any sport, and the OSOS insists that all competitive Slurping matches/events be sanctioned by the OSOS.
Meaning they take place in a controlled environment with the proper safety measures in place.
The OSOS will not sanction nor promote any events that do not adhere to the highest safety regulations
The OSOS believes that speed Slurping should only be conducted in a controlled environment with appropriate rules and with an emergency medical technician present.
The OSOS urges all interested parties to become involved in supervised sanctioned events that adhere to the official rules. |
